Why alarm-free days carry the weight

One observation concerns mornings when no alarm is set, and it is the conventional observable for a quiet reason: with work and social obligations removed, sleep timing settles toward your underlying circadian preference rather than the clock imposed on you. A free morning says more about your own rhythm than a working one ever can.

The honest middle

Chronotype is a continuum, and most people sit in the intermediate middle rather than at either extreme. Whatever the quiz returns is a lean, not a box. Timing also moves across a life: children lean early, the pattern drifts markedly later through adolescence to a lifetime latest point around age twenty, then eases gradually earlier again through adulthood and older age.

What is settled, and what is not

Quite a lot here remains contested, and this site says so plainly.

  • How strongly time-of-day performance peaks depend on chronotype is itself debated, since the size of the effect varies by task type and study.
